Ole Longboard Classic Event Results

Eric Casco’s dream day ended Kekaula Campbell’s three-year winning streak at the 19th annual Ole Longboard Classic, Saturday at Launiupoko Park.

Over 190 entries surfed chest-high waves in calm conditions.

Casco, a 32-year-old Maui County Parks & Recreation employee from Lahaina, had the two best scores in the 15-minute open men’s final. Campbell had won five times, including the past three in a row.

“It was a dream come true,” Casco said. “My main concern was to change the name on that trophy.”

The winner of the open men has their name placed on a perpetual trophy. Casco made sure his name would be planted on the trophy as he planted both feet on the nose of his board while riding left on his highest-scoring rides.

“Practicing out her, I noticed this left is more holding for nose-riding,” Casco said. “It’s a little more powerful than the rights.”

Campbell, a Kamehameha Schools counselor, had earlier defeated Casco in their 30-39 age group final.

“We were showering after our heat, and I told him, ‘I think you might have got that one’,” Campbell told Casco. “I knew Eric was keeping busy on the inside. I’m happy for him.”

Another surfer who was keeping busy was Kazuma Saita. He placed fifth in the open men, but won his 19-29 age group and the Ole board division. Saita surfed nine heats.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said the 22-year-old surf shop employee from Kihei. “But the open men is the one I really wanted to win. I want to get my name on the big trophy.”

Mahelani Ah Hee, of Kahului, won the open women for the second time,  defeating former champion Ayako Iguchi and former touring pro Megan Abubo..

“I was really surprised at winning first especially because Megan was there,” Ah Hee said. “”It was little tricky out there, hard to find the peak in our finals heat.”

Ocean Macedo won the biggest division, defeating 35 surfers to win the menehune class.

Other champions included: Archie Kalepa and Mandee Dayoan (tandem), Tosh Kalawe (juniors), Travis Baptiste (junior men), Sierra Larsen (junior women), Ken Goring (40-49), Moe Serafica (50-59), and Kevin Eide (60 & over).
