2010 STARBOARD SLALOM NEWS & RESULTS
THE MAUI RACE SERIES - JUNE 10 2010
Micah
Buzianis won six of eight windsurfing races to win two divisions in the
Starboard Slalom, Saturday at Kanaha Beach Park.
Competitors
enjoyed steady 18-20 knot winds in the first event of the 26th
annual Maui Race Series.
Buzianis
had to catch a plane for Spain five hours after his final heat at Kanaha. The
39-year-old Speckelsville resident will compete in the $66,330 Costa Bravo
World Cup on Tuesday.
Micah Buzianis - Courtesy Harry Wiewel
“Today
was a perfect day,” Buzianis said shortly after wrapping up the pro division.
“Good racing, good wind, ideal for where I’m going.”
In
the morning 18-39 age group races, Buzianis won all four of his heats, only to
find out later, he was disqualified in one heat for crossing the starting line
early. He and five other racers were
penalized.
“I
saw the other guys were like five seconds early,” Buzianis said. “I stopped at
the line. No way I was over.”
In
the afternoon pro division, Buzianis was just as dominant, winning three of
four heats. “I had some good races with Peter Slate, and a couple of good ones
with Kevin (Ozee) and Kai (Hopf).
Buzianis
is currently ranked number four in racing on the Professional Windsurfing
Association world tour after finishing fourth at the Ulsan World Cup in Korea
last month. The PWA schedule will allow him to compete in most of the MRS
races.
Tamara Bockius - Courtesy Harry Wiewel
His
wife, Laura, son Lance, 6, and daughter K.C., 3, were his cheering section at
Kanaha. Since all the PWA events are
overseas, racing in the MRS is the only time his family can see him compete. “It’s
nice to have them here watching. I’m stoked I’m going to be here for most of
the Maui races.”
Mike
Yasak (50-59) and Greg Thomas (60 & over) won all four of their heats in
claiming their age divisions. Other winners included Ozee (40-49),Tamara Bockius (women), Olaf Sutor
(waveboard), Bernd Roediger (juniors), John Smalley (semi-pro), and Chris
McNeil (expert).
